When I received shift report for my very ill, bed-bound patient, the RN giving report pointed out the tracker affixed to his anklet. She had admitted him a few hours earlier and did not know the details and there was nothing noted in his chart. Before she left, she looked online and he is a convicted sex offender (lewd and lascivious with a minor under the age of 14).
Is it appropriate to add this new information (pedophilia) to your shift report? To his chart? Discussion on Nursing Forum

Nice to see that majority of the people in the thread though the actions of having looked up the patient on the net and then potentially loging the found info in the report is inappropriate, in both cases.
Hope the patient finds out about this and sues the hospital and nurse.
Had this been a different crime, would it have been so easy to look online? It could be if there’s a registry for everything.
This psychotic nurse who “googled” his/her patient needs to be FIRED and LOSE HIS/HER LICENSE immediately! Welcome to Nazi Germany here in America! I know, let’s encourage all doctors and medical staff to “google” their patients and then the ones they don’t like, just whack them with an injection of potassium! [sarcasm]
I REALLY hope that someone pursues this and that this nurse will be removed from this profession. Makes me sick!
Hope the patient reads this blog, sees that the nurse (?) even “suggested” he is a pedophile and takes her to court.
She only needed to note in his chart and when giving report, that “patient has an ankle bracelet in place on whatever ankle” and that’s only for safety reasons incase he needed an MRI or access to a charger for his device. That’s it. The rest is none of her business and she has no business getting online at her place of work to Google this guy and then spread gossip about him.
Hope the hospital gets wind of this as well.
